Camel Racing in Abu Dhabi – Sports OF THE DESERT

Abu Dhabi is one of the cosmopolitan cities of the Middle East and hosts visitors from across the world every year. However, the peak for the races is from October to April. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday are considered to be the most popular race days. There are usually two sessions of races that take place , one being the morning races that commence at 7.30am and the other being the afternoon slot which usually commences at around 2.30 pm. There are fifteen race tracks spread across the UAE. The distance varies from race to race and the general distance is usually 4K to 10K. Some races have 15 camels while some can go up to about 70. The attire to attend camel races is quite casual. Some races also serve free refreshments.

The morning races are usually the camels of the Sheikhs while the others are open races, the ones that take place in the afternoon. Winning an afternoon race is considered to be highly prestigious. So when visiting the UAE make sure to tick this off your to-do list.
