Knee Boarding in Maldives – Close to the Water

Knee boarding is very similar to surfing. The knee boarder uses a wooden or synthetic board and paddles on the belly out to a wave and then rides the wave to the shore kneeling on the board. Knee boarding calls for the same conditions as for surfing, massive waves that the rider can go out to. Only a handful of location can provide this requirement and the Maldives is one of them. The unbelievable waves here make Maldives an ultimate knee boarding destination. Knee boarding locations in the Maldives offer unpolluted pristine beaches, clear water and warm weather and no crowds as opposed to many other knee boarding destinations. Knee boarding weather prevails in the Maldives from mid February up to November. However June to August with big swells appears to be the ideal time for surf related sports and the seasons gradually winds down after that. North Male Atoll is where the most well known breaks occur with Pasta Point providing the best and most consistent breaks.

The tube is considered the ultimate ride both for surfers and knee boarders. The rider heads into a perfect tube shaped wave and gets into it so as to ride it from the inside. The longer the knee boarder remains in the wave it is a great ride. No doubt knee boarders will have to find the wave with the perfect shape to achieve this feat. During the season the Maldives has no shortage of perfect tubes.

Knee boarding is also a tow sport where a rider kneeling on a board is strapped on to the board attached to a boat travelling at around 28-32 km/h. Which-ever way the kneeboard is used experienced knee boarders love to show off and perform several showy moves borrowed from water skiing and surfing. The advantage of knee boarding above other similar sports is being close to a wave and the feeling of speed that enhances the experience and it helps being close to the water when falls occur. Apparently negotiating a tube wave is easier when knee boarding as it is easier to get into position. Knee boarding enthusiasts believe that the sport brings together the skills unique to all surf sports.
