Top Surf Spots in Maldives – Riding the Wild Waves of the Maldives

The Sparkling blue waters of the Maldives provides so much more than mere scenic appeal for it is the location for some of the most exciting of all water sports. No one leaves the Maldives without indulging in the world of water sports that his nation has to offer. There are several types of sports to choose from; some are more quiet and others are more wild but perhaps the most popular of all sports on the Maldivian Ocean has always been Surfing.

Surfing is dependent on the swell of waves. Although the Maldives does not have very large swells, there are plenty of chances of barrels and several long fun waves. The interesting part about wave swell in Maldives is that it is amazingly consistent and Surf lovers always have something to try out. The best Surf spots in Maldives is scattered around three main areas; The Central Atolls, The Male atolls and the South Atolls. The primary differences between the 3 linger around swell size, consistency and crowd but the best part is most of these surf spots are located in close proximity to each other.

The season and speed of winds greatly affect the size of waves so it is important to choose the right dates if you are a keen surfer. April to October is considered the best period for surfing in the Maldives with the largest swells expected between June and September.

The large number of Reef breaks around the 3 Maldivian archipelagoes offers something for everyone. Interesting locations such as Chickens, Cokes and Lohis are some of the most popular reef breaks found in the Northern atolls. These breaks are known for their fantastic rides amidst the most breathtaking settings. For Beginners who want to try a shot at surfing the Piddlies/ Ninja is an excellent surf spot and the Sultan found at the eastern reef of the north Male Atoll picks up the most swell and happens to be the most consistent break. Other excellent Surf Spots around the North Male Atoll are the Honky’s, the Tomb stones, the Male island point, the Gurus, Twin Peaks and the Quarters.

After an adventurous day surfing, come home to the Naladhu, Maldives; the finest of all the Maldives luxury hotels.

Snorkelling in Kalpitiya – Fun Adventures at Sea

Renowned as the place for dolphin and whale watching, the small coastal town of Kalpitiya has lots to offer. For those with a keen interest in snorkelling and scuba diving this is the place to be. The country’s largest coral beef also known as Bar Reef is within an hour’s travel from Kalpitiya. What await you here are schools of colourful fish, reef sharks, mantras and even turtles. Now isn’t that definitely a one of a kind experience?

Stretching across three nautical miles you have to reach this spot by boat. The thriving coral attract plenty of sea creatures and the clear water makes this place an excellent site to embark on your adventure. Starting from about 2 metres you can venture as deep as 40 metres. This also means that Bar Reef is ideal for everyone; from beginners to the more experienced. However diving or snorkelling is not advised between May and November as it is when Sri Lanka has its Southwest monsoon.  Ideally you must make your trip from late November to early May.

The ridge, another zone in this beautiful beach is exclusively for scuba diving. Pearl Banks is also only for scuba diving and though the full day trip might put off many, the chance to see pearl oysters indeed compensates for the time taken.

Still making itself a name as a tourist destination also means that Kalpitiya has the upside of not swarming with tourists. If you are looking for ideal Kalpitiya hotels in this area consider Palagama Beach Kalpitiya which makes an ideal base for your adventures.
