The initial tournament featured teams from Asia and Pacific nations, New Zealand and Australia. As the series grew in popularity and became an accepted international rugby fixture it was relocated in 1982 to the Hong Kong Stadium. Seen as a modernizing impetus in the rugby scene the Hong Kong Rugby Sevens opened up the game to a larger level of international competition that had not existed in the game before and provided an opportunity for Asian nations in particular to display their rugby skills. The Hong Kong Sevens certainly helped to popularize this action packed version of the game amongst the nations that annually take part in the competition and even beyond.
