Galle International Cricket Stadium – A Picturesque Sporting Venue

Bounded by the sounds of the lapping turquoise sea and the sight of swaying coconut fronds, Galle is a heavenly coastal escape for amazing getaways. It is not only a holiday destination famed for its pristine beaches but a place of historic importance. Head over to Galle and indulge in the breeze from the Indian Ocean while you enjoy the Dutch colonial era backdrop.

Located facing the beautiful Indian Ocean and the historic Dutch Fort above, the Galle International Cricket Stadium is one of the most scenic grounds in the world. The cricket ground formally known as “The Esplanade” was home to the Galle Cricket Club.

Before building the cricket stadium this ground was initially used as a race course in 1876. Subsequently a permanent pavilion and a grandstand were added. Eventually the ground was used for cricket matches more often than racing. With the ceasing of racing the ground was declared as a cricket stadium.

1984 is cherished as when the ground held its first significant match. After a few years the ground was upgraded to international cricket standards, becoming the 7th international cricket stadium in Sri Lanka to host test matches. Despite the international recognition, it was devastated at the end of 2004 due to the Tsunami that hit the island. Under the guidance of President Mahinda Rajapakse the grounds was renovated and was also renamed after him. It soon reached its rightful place in the cricketing world as a picturesque ground and outstanding venue.

The Galle International Cricket Stadium came into the spotlight again in 2010 as it hosted the last match of one of the best cricketers produced by Sri Lanka; Muttiah Muralitharan.
