Great American Ballpark: Home of the Cincinnati Reds

Home of the much loved Cincinnati Reds, the Great American Ball Park is situated magnificently in downtown Cincinnati along the banks of the Ohio River. Cincinnati Reds is renowned as the first professional franchise of baseball. The Great American Ball Park which is a Major League Baseball Park officially opened in March 31, 2003. It was a replacement to the Cincinnati Red’s previous home which was Cinergy Field, better known as Riverfront Stadium.
At one time the Cincinnati Reds as well as the Cincinnati Bengals of the National Football League together shared the occupancy of Riverfront Stadium. However, they were not too content with the facilities found at Cinergy Field and continued to complain about the condition of the stadium. As a result, the Great American Ball Park was constructed amid the site of the U.S. Bank Arena and the former Cinergy Field. Since the new stadium was built close to the Ohio River, the problem of lack of space arose. This in turn required the demolition of part of the Cinergy Field.
The Great American Ball Park is complete with many interesting features such as The Gap, Power Stacks, the Spirit of Baseball which is a gigantic carving found at the entrance and a mosaic that pays tribute to two major, celebrated Reds teams.
Another special and intriguing feature at this stadium is the scoreboard itself. This 9 inches wide and 217 feet high scoreboard is recognized as one of the biggest in Major League Baseball. The scoreboard was later revamped in to an LED scoreboard that was equipped with a high definition video screen. Other important features include the Toyota Tundra Home Run Deck, Crosley Terrace, 4192 Mural, Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame and Museum, the Home Runs, Riverboat Deck and Center Field.
Apart from major baseball events, the Great American Ball Park has also held some noteworthy non baseball events such as the campaign rally held by President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush in October 2004.
