St James Park – A long tradition of sport

Carrying on a long tradition of football in Newcastle, St James Park is the regular venue for matches of this popular sport. Holding a position as the largest and oldest stadium in the North East of England, the stadium can seat up to 52,387 enthusiastic fans at a time. St. James also has the distinction of being the seventh largest football stadium in the entirety of the United Kingdom.

The main use of the stadium has been for club football, but this doesn’t stop it from being used for international matches including certain matches of Euro 1996. St. James Park is also set to be used for the 2012 Olympics as well. One of the main characteristics of the stadium is that it has the important distinction of being the home ground of Newcastle United which has played all their home matches at this stadium.

But going beyond the simple sporting events many artists have graced this venue with their musical talent including Bruce Springsteen, Bryan Adams, The Rolling Stones and many others. St James was also used in the football movie Goal about a player who signs up with Newcastle United.

Footballs fans have a strong reputation for hitting the pubs after matches and it should come as no surprise that the entire area around the stadium features plenty of pubs to grab a drink and small bites.

Also located nearby is the “The Backpage” bookshop which is a must visit for football fans. Housed inside are an incredible amount of books relating purely to football in addition to DVD’s and other memorabilia.

When visiting the city, travellers will need to stay in a Newcastle hotel that meets their needs. Copthorne Hotel Newcastle presents an accommodation option in a picturesque location on the banks of the River Tyne in addition to a range of amenities.
